Safety signs are a means of communicating a wide range of health and safety information to people at work and are to be found in almost all workplaces.
There are a number of different safety signs which can be used to point out specific hazards in the working environment.

The main aim of safety signs is to provide a message which is readily understood. As a result there are standard colours and images, known as pictograms, which are understood internationally.
Whilst the minimum requirement is for a pictogram, the use of text makes the message unambiguos.
Under the regulations signs must :
- Be maintained and kept clean
- Be explained to employees.
- Be durable and securely fixed.
Prohibition signs.
These are probably the most common signs in a workplace and are used to inform people that certain behaviour could increase or cause danger.
Warning signs.
These signs are designed to make people aware of nearby hazards.
Mandatory signs.
These signs indicate actions that MUST be carried out in order to safeguard individuals.
Safe condition signs.
Typically used to show escape routes, emergency exits and first aid equipment.
Miscellaneous
This area covers signs and equipment that are not safety specific but are, nonetheless, usefull in any organisation.
